Hello lovely crafters! For several months I had the idea to create split card fronts and hold them together with butterfly die-cuts.
So I finally give flesh to this idea using the Spellbinders Delicate Butterflies die set!
+ Today we are celebrating a NEW WOW embossing powder release so I used the new colours of embossing powders to add interest in texture to the butterflies on all the projects in this post.
New Wow Embossed Trios
The new WOW Embossing powders Trios will be available later today over the Simon Says Stamp online store here.
- Time Traveler ( Opaque Primary Fossil, Primary Sunbean, Primary Royal Purple)

Time Traveler Embossing Powder Colours
This mini slimline card features a vertical split card front that is held together using Delicate Butterflies die-cuts.
To add metallic and gungy textures to the butterflies, I used powders from the WOW Time Traveller Trio that includes :
- Sunbean
- Primary Royal Purple
- Opaque Primary Fossil embossing powders.
I applied layers of embosisng powder and I heat seat each layer before applying the next one.
You can use clear ink, any adhesive, paste, or even water to hold the embossing powder in place before heat setting.
Although it is not their purpose or they haven’t been designed to do this, I decided to try the Simon Says Stamp Micro Dots that held the powder in a very unexpected way …
The fine powder grains were easily attached to the microdots creating a sandy texture when applying heat. I quite like that!
I used the WOW heat tool BTW. I really like the heat gun.
Oh!!! and for a more dramatic look, I also added a chunky layer of WOW Ultra High Gold Embossing Powder. That embossing powder is gorgeous!!
You can see the golden edges of the butterflies.. well that is just one layer of WOW Ultra High Gold Embossing Powder.
I also used hot foiled sentiment and flowers made using the Spellbinders Holiday Blooms die set.
To embellish, I added Gold Mix Gems.
For this super simple card, I did a vertical cut on the front card panel. This is a very simple idea but it is easy, cute and different.
To hold the 2 pieces of the front panel together, I used 2 die-cut circles.
One die-cut out of teal glitter paper that is holding the front panel together and the other one was cut out of white cardstock covering and stabilising the back.
You can use any die-cut to hold the panel pieces… watch the videos below to see how I do it.
WOW Island Time Trio Embossing Powder colours
To add colour and texture to the butterfly, I used the new Sea Flower embossing powder included in the WOW Island Time Trio.
- I simply applied clear ink over the die-cut.
- Then, I applied the powder over a piece of paper, dabbed the die-cuts over the powder, and heat set
- While the powder was hot and sticky I repeat the process over and over.
For this card, I affix the butterfly over a piece of teal glitter paper but you can make your own glitter paper using the powders as I did for the box below...
So I applied clear ink and the new WOW Clear Ocean embossing powder on a circle die- cut and I heat set it so it was that easy to add sparkle to that piece.
