Hello crafty friends, today I’m featuring Spellbinders Open House Die Sets available at Spellbinders here and on Simon Says Stamp here.
I’m also passing by to share a technique that I have called “Distress Inks Brick Technique“.
Spellbinders Open House Door Base
The Open House die collection includes one main die set called Open House Door Base in the picture below + several coordinating dies sets to customize cards for different occasions.
For the cards today I used:
- Open House Door Base [ Available at SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders].
- SPRING Etched Dies [Available at SimonSaysStamp or sSellbinders ]
- VALENTINES [ Available at SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders ]
- PUMPKIN TOPIARY Etched Dies [ SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders ]
- To die-cut all the pieces I used the Spellbinders Platinum Die Cutting and Embossing Machine.
Distress Inks Realistic / Eye Catching Look and Feel
Distress Ink BRICK Technique
I love the contrast between red bricks, concrete walls, and stone plant pots and I found a nice ink recipe to add that “stone look” to my projects.
Scattered Straw seems to be a perfect base color to create many different “stone looks”, then you will need Peeled Paint Oxide ink, Gathered Twigs, Hickory Smoke Oxide Spray, and Black Soot Distress Ink.
To add the brick look and feel you will also need the following ink colours:
The process
- Trim and emboss a piece of Neenah Classic Crest 80 LB using the Tim Holtz Mini Brickwork embossing folder.
- Apply the oxide inks first ( Scaterred Straw and Peeled Paint) on different areas of the panel leaving white areas.
- Then, using Simon Says Stamp Brushes appply the other ink colours listed above.
- Bear in mind that you need to add small patches of colour here and there ( also leaving white areas or avoid covering completely the layers of colour praviouly applied)
- Next, spray a little bit of Hickory Smoke Oxide Spray ( place the bottle far appart from the paper so that you only get some splaters here and there)
- Spray the piece 2 or 4 times with water using a Nuvo Spray Bottle, and allow the inky poodles of water to dry in the cracks of the embossed panel.
- To finish, apply Black Soot over the panel and also at the edges using an ergonomic brush to reveal the brick embossed pattern.
- Done!
To add color to the plant pots and the wall in the background, I used the base ink colors: Scattered Straw, Peeled Paint Oxide ink, Gathered Twigs, Hickory Smoke Oxide Spray, and Black Soot Distress Ink.
I just applied different amounts of each ink colour and I always use very little ink.
Any green ink colour will be nice for the greenery and flower leaves.
Bonus Project
For those who prefer using only coloured cardstock here is another idea using Spellbinders Open House die sets.
You can mix and match Open House Die Sets to create any occasion composition and for all the seasons.
All the dies in the collection coordinate together or can be used individually.
San Valentines Slimline Card
I was crazy to add a light background to this slimline but I wanted it to look kind of similar to the other project in this post, so I added a dark gray embossed background.
The sky’s the limit tho.
To make this card I die-cut smooth cardstock in different colors and also gold mirror cardstock.
I mixed and matched the Open House die sets listed below:
- Open House Door Base [ Available at SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders].
- SPRING Etched Dies [Available at SimonSaysStamp or Sellbinders ]
- VALENTINES [ Available at SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders ]
I made a little scarf for one of the bunnies using a die from PUMPKIN TOPIARY Etched Dies [SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders ].
To die-cut the background panel, I used dies from Fluted Classic Slimline Die Set [Available at SimonSaysStamp or Spellbinders ] and once the panel was embossed I passed over a white ink pad.
I also used the Embossing Folder of the Month to add a texture to the background.
- This is a large format embossing folder.
- It measures 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches and it is a new Spellbinders club kit available in 2022 ( Local UK delivery in 2022).
